Laughing Buddha

One of the most beloved of Buddha's images, the Laughing Buddha (Maitreya or Mi Lo Foh) can be found in many Chinese homes and Chinese restaurants. He brings prosperity and Wealth luck to all. The wonderful Buddha of Happiness also loves to pick up all our troubles and problems and put them in the huge calico bag he carries around. Then, in return, he transforms them into abundant happiness. Laughing Buddha is called Hotei among the Japanese.

The large bag he carries contains money, candy, children, food, rice plants or other indicators of wealth. He is happy – and is called the Happy Man - because he is well fed (indicated by his big belly), wealthy and can afford to be generous. The
