Feng Shui and Fortune 500 companies
Many companies across the United States, Europe and Asia have been incorporating Eastern practices to gain a financial edge over their business rivals. The list includes several companies listed in Fortune 500 and names like Chase Asia, Paine Webber, McKinsey and Company, the Morgan Bank and even the offices of Asian Wall Street Journal. Now Chase Asia strictly follows Feng Shui advice but only after encountering a bad experience a few years ago. The office of the manager was unlucky.
The coffin shape of the windows of his cabin was virtually an invitation to disaster. The shape and design of all the windows needed changing. Feng cure would require as the building overlooked a graveyard! Seeing the inconvenience such an exercise would require Chase India delayed executing the required Feng Shui changes. In less than three months the manager was killed in a plane crash in Kuala Lumpur.
The Asian Wall Street Journal moved in but only after all the Feng Shui protective measures were taken. Hong Kong and Shanghai Bank took Feng Shui advice on the design and location of a temporary office for its Chairman even as the new headquarters were being constructed.
The first Indian business house that successfully tried Feng Shui was Khaitan. It happened a few years ago. The toilet of this company was in the Wealth & Good Fortune area! It was immediately shifted; to the delight of the Khaitans, business zoomed.
P. V. Narasimha Rao, the former Prime Minister of India, told me during a brief chat in Mumbai that tradition can blend with modern thinking - Feng Shui can co-exist with computers and IT revolution. Twenty-five years later, I remember him, as India takes long strides in becoming an economic superpower.
I admired the visionary, referred to him as Chanakaya (India's equivalent to Machiavelli) and frequently put him on the cover of a weekly I used to edit!
Corus, the Anglo-Dutch steel maker, was bought for £6.2 billion by Tatas of India in January 2007 after a dramatic shoot-out with the rival bidder CSN of Brazil. Tatas bought Corus after a dramatic clash with CSN of Brazil.
The result of the auction shocked industry watchers who expected the Brazilian company to prevail.
The merger of Tata and Corus created the world's fifth biggest steel maker and gave it greater ability to compete with Arcelor Mittal, the number one player.

Incidentally, Arcelor Mittal was created after Laxmi Mittal, another Indian, took over its European rival last year.
Six months later, in the summer of 2007, the Tata Group, acquired Ford Motor Company’s Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) for $2.3 billion. It seemed the case of wrong timings to pick up an acquisition of such enormity. The mortgage market had collapsed in the US and a financial crisis was looming large. Tata Motors Ltd, described as an Indian company that produced cheap small cars and trucks, was successful in turning JLR around where an iconic auto maker and others had failed. In fact, to begin with a debt of Rs. 21,900 crore in 2008, and to post a steep rise in profit in a little over two years is nothing short of a miracle.
Not only did it sell more cars, but revenues increased by more than fifty percent. Now, far from closing a factory, JLR is considering building a new engine plant here.
Today, almost every business in India - whether a small boutique catering to women's apparels or a large corporate office spread over thousands of square meters, or for that matter manufacturing plants spread over hundreds of acres of land - ensures that Feng Shui is flawless.
Feng Shui has certainly played a crucial role in the miraculous growth of Indian business houses in India and abroad.
Absence of loyalty, lack of commitment, betrayal by business partners, pilferage, industrial espionage, and absenteeism can cripple any flourishing business. Feng Shui of the surroundings influences commitment, motivational level, energy, enthusiasm, sense of pride and belonging and productivity of the employees. A company’s entire fortune depends on the good sitting position of its President and Manager. While incorrect location of different sections which brings about a clash of elements can cause havoc with a company's balance sheet, an ideal placement of various departments positively contributes to the success of a business.
